Rent a Holiday House in Limousin's Charming Hamlets
Located in central France, on the plateau of the Massif Central mountains, Limousin is the second-least populated region of France besides Corsica Central. In recent years, a number of British, Belgian, and Dutch expats have bought second homes here, giving tourism a much-needed boost. The availability of holiday homes, holiday rentals, and holiday apartments to rent have likewise increased. Two French presidents -- namely Jacques Chirac and Francois Hollande -- hail from Limousin. The name comes from the Lemovices, an ancient Celtic tribe.
Culture That Stays
Once a Roman city, main city Limoges was known for its porcelain production and narrow streets lined with half-timbered houses. Locals play traditional instruments such as the bagpipe and hurdy gurdy, with July and August the best months for local music festivals, like the Festival du Haut Limousin. Popular dishes include Pâté aux Pommes de Terre (baked potato slices and fresh cream seasoned with garlic, bacon, and parsley) and clafouti, a dessert baked with black cherries. While here, watch out for the chestnut-colored herds of Limousin cattle, which provide the best regional beef. Limousin's geography is scattered with hills, deciduous woods, grazing land, low mountains, forests, gorges, and moors. The three major rivers, the Charente, the Vienne, and the Dordogne are popular spots for fishing, sailing, and kayaking. Sporty types will enjoy the Parc Naturel Régional de Millevaches and the Limousin highlands for its range of outdoor activities. A fun vacation awaits.
